Medicare Supplement Plan C was a Medicare Supplement plan that covers most health costs that are not covered by original Medicare Part A or original Medicare Part B.
Plan C is often confused with Medicare Part C, which is known as Medicare Advantage; however, these 2 plans are very different. Plan C is supplemental insurance for people enrolled in Original Medicare. Medicare Part C is an alternative to using original Medicare.
Medicare Supplement Plan C Coverage
Plan C was found to be one of the most comprehensive Medicare Supplement Plans available out of the 10 offered plans. Original Medicare won’t cover everything and Medicare Supplement Plans were created to cover the costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover.
For example, you have an annual Medicare Part B deductible and you have to pay 20% for additional medical costs. Plan C pays most of the health costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover.
Medicare Supplement Plan C includes:
- Once the original Medicare benefits expire
- you can have up to 365 days of hospital coinsurance and copay when you see your doctor and additional Medicare Part B services.
- How to use coinsurance in qualified care and/or hospice care
- First 3 liters of blood used for various medical procedures deductible from $1,340 for your Medicare Part A Deductible to 183 USD for your Medicare Part B Overseas
- Travel Emergencies Limited according to your plans Eligibility Medicare C Supplement Plan
Anyone enrolled in Medicare Part B is eligible to enroll in one of the Medicare Supplement Plans or Medigap plans, such as Plan C.
The easiest way to qualify for this coverage is through their 6-month Open Enrolment Period (OEP).
This starts with you on (the first day of the first month) when you turn 65 or older, and are enrolled in Part B. If you enroll during the open enrollment period, you automatically qualify for a policy and guarantee that you will not be denied or higher premiums will be charged for existing health insurance policies. Waiting for post-OEP enrollments causes the policy to be “medically subscribed”, resulting in higher premiums or problems finding coverage.

Signing Up for a Medigap Plan C
If you are over 65 years old and have employer health insurance at age 65 and have not enrolled in Medicare Part B, your 6-month OEP of Medigap will begin the month you enroll in Medicare Part B. For all those over 65 who are already enrolled in Medicare, your open enrollment period will be expired.
You can still apply for a medically signed Medigap Plan C. For disabilities and under 65, Medigap eligibility depends on the state in which you live. Some states have very few Medigap plans or there are no options for disabled plans, and most children under 65 require that you pay a higher premium than those over 65.
Costs for Medicare Supplement Plan C
The monthly premium amounts for Plan C depend on where you live, the tariff structure of the plan, and the health insurance company you choose when you are charged the most for your health and age.
Because Medicare supplemental plans that include plan C are standardized to ensure you get exactly the same health insurance benefits as insurance policies from all insurance companies.
Plan C versus Plan F
The difference between F and C is that Plan C doesn’t cover the “extra cost” of Medicare which might be an additional supplement for doctors who add up to 15% to your bill for fees you consider too low.
Otherwise, plan F and Plan C are the same. However, Plan F, which offers the most insurance coverage, is usually the most expensive insurance. Note that some states do not allow excessive fees, i.e. you live in one of those states, or if your doctors don’t charge the deductible, you can save money by choosing plan C instead of plan F.

Plan C versus Plan G
Plan G is like plan F, as it covers your excess fees. Plan G differs from Plan C in that you don’t pay an annual deductible of $183 for Medicare Part B.
If you’re concerned about excessive fees, but you also want to save money, plan G might be a better option to use as a plan F or plan C.
What about AARP?
Each C plan covers your deductible for Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B. This includes the plans offered by AARP.

Will Medicare C plans require medical underwriting?
Subscription is not required as long as you register during your OEP (open enrollment period) or, if this is the case at any time, you have guaranteed rights issued. If you register anytime outside these periods, the insurance company can review your medical and medical history so that they can refuse your application or charge higher premiums based on your health and age. So make sure you enroll in all Medicare Supplement plans once you are qualified.
